We got our first snow of the season this morning in Portland! Max and I walked down the street to get some hot drinks after getting bundled up in every bit of clothing we own. Returning to our house we noticed how much nicer our yard looks when rendered invisible by an inch of snow.
We have at last begun putting down the wood flooring upstairs. After one night’s work, it looks like we are gearing up for a fashion show in our future bedroom. Here’s Henry working the catwalk, errr, dogwalk.

Yes I know. How is it that we still are living in the house that we were supposed to give to the Good Will a month ago because we failed to meet our last deadline. Simple. We are bad people.
Seems we respond better to rewards than threats, the reward being progress.
The flooring we bought is pretty fantastic. It is called Vida Grandis, which roughly translates from Spanish and Latin to Magnificent Life. It was only about $3/sf with our industry discount, and it’s a good sustainable alternative to many other wood floors out there. It’s from Argentinian Eucalyptus trees found in FSC-certified forests. It’s kind of pinkish, but we’ll either deal with it or try a brownish, hopefully non-toxic-ish stain.
Tomorrow someone is coming to measure for the bathroom mirror and glass shower enclosure/door. Just trying to do our part to keep the economy kicking. Amazing how quickly people call us back lately…seems that not many people are in need of glass and mirrors these days. I wonder if the smoke and mirrors people are doing any better.
From the Tom Lehrer Wikipedia entry:
Lehrer has commented that he doubts his songs had any real effect on those not already critical of the establishment: “I don’t think this kind of thing has an impact on the unconverted, frankly. It’s not even preaching to the converted; it’s titillating the converted… I’m fond of quoting Peter Cook, who talked about the satirical Berlin cabarets of the ’30s, which did so much to stop the rise of Hitler and prevent the Second World War.”
Max found this online and sent it to me. Look! It’s my sister Katie’s look-a-like modeling Nau’s bunny goat beanie! Uncanny.
Does it have to be evil to be a dopplegänger? Yes. And clearly she is a forebearer of bad luck. Paying $50 for a really simple hat named after a fictional yet terrifying animal hybrid in a time of ecomomic turmoil is nothing short of bad news. Run, Katie! Run.
Turns out that it translates to “little apple.” Who knew? Here it is, a gift from the managers of the cabin we stayed at:
Hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving holiday. I hear by way of my mom that she and my dad and brother and sis-in-law got into a pretty seriously competitive game of “Sorry” after dinner. I hope no one cried, that’s my job. Weee, can’t wait for Christmas!
Here are some shots from our trip to the Oregon Coast. Some are grainier than others, and those would be the ones I took with my camera phone. It was too drizzly most of the time to take the camera outside. Drizzly, misty, and many other forms of precipitation. We had to wring Henry out before we brought him inside. Especially after the hike to the top of Neahkahnie Mountain.

Our non-traditional Thanksgiving meal was delicious, btw. No tofurkeys attended, and the quadratini was gone by midnight.
We’re off to Manzanita to celebrate Thanksgiving with some tortellini, bruschetta and a bag of tiramisu flavored quadratini! Enjoy your day of feasting and good company, everybody. I’m thankful for you.
